Field Engineer
An Engineer Discipline with no specialty: extra skills and tools, repairs at no Charge cost, bonus action tool use and rerolls for failed tool checks.
Identity
The Field Engineer is the Engineer Discipline without a specialty. Most long-running crews have one: the person who patched the coolant line with cargo strapping, talked the airlock into cycling, set the bone, and then asked what was for dinner. Damage-control ratings, frontier claim-hands and expedition techs are sent out before anyone knows what will go wrong, and the Discipline trades depth for speed and a tolerance for improvisation that specialists read as recklessness.
Features
- L3 Improvised Fix
You gain proficiency in two skills of your choice from Investigation, Medicine, Perception, Sleight of Hand and Survival, and with one set of tools of your choice. Once per short or long rest, as an action and at no Charge cost, you can improvise a repair from materials at hand: restore hit points equal to 1d8 + your Engineer level to one damaged object, construct or vehicle, or end one malfunction affecting it.
- L7 Improvised Tools
You treat any tool set as though you were proficient with it, and you can substitute an improvised equivalent for any tool set you lack without penalty. You can also cast any Engineer spell you know using an object within reach as its focus, so losing your Apparatus does not stop you casting.
- L11 Fast Hands
Once on each of your turns, you can use a bonus action to take the Use an Object action, administer a consumable to yourself or a creature within 5 feet, or make one check with a tool set.
- L15 Second Attempt
As a reaction, when you or an ally within 30 feet fails an ability check made with a tool set, or a saving throw against a hazard from a machine, vehicle or structure, you can spend 2 Charges to have that creature reroll it and use the second result. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all uses on a long rest.
- L18 Salvage Build Capstone
At the end of a short or long rest, you can build one improvised device from any wreckage at hand, which takes ten minutes of that rest. Choose a common or uncommon item of your Engineer level's tech tier or lower. It functions for 24 hours or until you build another, and it needs no attunement. In addition, once per long rest you can restore a destroyed construct, vehicle or piece of equipment to 1 hit point and working order, provided its pieces are present.
