Way of the Earth

A Monk tradition of Earth-Rifting: bludgeoning strikes that push or knock Prone, difficult terrain, immovability while stationary, and a reaction that halts a creature leaving the monk's reach.

Identity

The Way of the Earth is the Monk tradition of waiting for the opponent to come. Earth monks train in weighted stances on ground they have chosen, and they hold that the fighter who has to cross the distance has already lost. They keep monasteries in Nordvergur deep-holds and on the ballast decks of colony ships, places with mass to draw on.

Features

  • L3 Stone Fist

Your unarmed strikes can deal bludgeoning damage that ignores resistance to nonmagical damage. You can also spend 1 Ki as part of an attack to force the target to make a Strength saving throw against your Ki save DC. On a failure, the target is pushed 10 feet or knocked Prone, your choice.

  • L7 Working the Ground

As an action, you can spend 2 Ki to work the ground. A 20-foot square within 30 feet becomes difficult terrain for 1 minute. Each creature in the square when you use this feature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw against your Ki save DC or be Restrained until the end of its next turn.

  • L11 Set Stance

While you are standing on solid ground and have not moved this turn, you cannot be moved against your will and you have advantage on Strength saving throws. Any creature that hits you with a melee attack takes bludgeoning damage equal to your Martial Arts die.

  • L15 Halting Blow

When a creature within 5 feet of you tries to move away, you can use your reaction and spend 1 Ki to end its movement. It takes bludgeoning damage equal to your Martial Arts die plus your Strength or Dexterity modifier.

  • L18 Avatar of the Earth Capstone

Once per long rest, as an action, you can spend 5 Ki to plant yourself for 1 minute. For the duration, your speed is 0 and cannot be changed, you have resistance to all damage, and all squares within 15 feet of you are difficult terrain for creatures hostile to you. Any creature that starts its turn within 15 feet of you must succeed on a Strength saving throw against your Ki save DC or be knocked Prone.
