Way of the Planewalker
A Monk tradition of passing between planes: phasing through thin obstacles, etheric sight, strikes that ignore cover, a passage to a known place and an Etheric Form at 18th level.
Identity
The Way of the Planewalker is the Monk tradition of travel between planes on foot. A Planewalker goes out through the Spirit Plane, along the edge of the Rift and briefly into the near reaches of places that were not built for visitors. The halls stand on thin ground, often somewhere inconvenient, and the forms are all footwork.
Features
- L3 Step Beyond
As part of your movement, you can spend 1 Ki to phase through a single obstacle no thicker than 5 feet, such as a wall, a door, a Halcyion containment field of Tier III or lower, or a thin Mythar-warded surface (the GM decides). You emerge on the other side and spend movement equal to the obstacle's thickness, then you can continue moving. You take 1 force damage per 5 feet of obstacle you pass through. If you would end your movement inside an obstacle, you return to your starting space and the Ki is not spent.
- L7 Etheric Sight
As a bonus action, you can spend 1 Ki to attune your sight to the etheric register for 10 minutes. For the duration, you can see Invisible creatures and objects within 60 feet, and you can see ethereal or partly etheric creatures within 60 feet. You also see the layout of physical obstacles up to 30 feet beyond any wall, floor or ceiling you can see, as a monochrome silhouette with no detail. Rift-active surfaces, such as places recently channeled on, Rift-warded areas and active gear, are visible to you within 60 feet. Your eyes turn reflective while the attunement lasts.
- L11 Phase Strike
Your unarmed strikes and monk weapon attacks ignore half cover, three-quarters cover and total cover that is no thicker than 5 feet, and that cover does not block your line of sight for resolving them. You still need to perceive the target, which Etheric Sight can provide. Once per turn, when you hit a creature with an unarmed strike or monk weapon, you can spend 1 Ki to deal an extra 2d8 force damage.
- L15 Etheric Passage
Once per long rest, as an action, you can spend 4 Ki to open an Etheric Passage between your location and a place you have been to and can still locate in your mind, such as a room you have stood in, a stretch of corridor you have walked or a beach you remember well. You and up to five willing creatures within 10 feet of you step through and emerge at the destination. The trip takes 1 minute on foot for those passing through. Observers at either end see a brief opening that closes behind the last creature through. The Passage cannot cross planar boundaries the GM rules to be hard sealed, such as active Mythar planar locks, Halcyion strategic ward grids of Tier V and certain Continuum Crystal interfaces.
- L18 Etheric Form Capstone
Once per long rest, as a bonus action, you can spend 5 Ki to enter Etheric Form for 1 minute. While in Etheric Form: You exist partly on the Spirit Plane. You can move through solid objects and creatures as if they were difficult terrain, and you take 1d6 force damage per 5 feet you move through a solid object. You are Invisible to creatures that lack truesight, etheric sight or comparable detection. You can attack and be attacked normally, but attacks against you have disadvantage unless the attacker can see ethereal targets. Your unarmed strikes deal an extra 1d8 force damage and can target ethereal and incorporeal creatures normally. Etheric Form ends early if you fall Unconscious, are subjected to a banishment effect of 5th level or higher, or end it as a free action. When it ends, you move to the nearest unoccupied space if you are inside a solid object.
