Oathbreaker

A Paladin who broke an oath and kept the power, with a fear-causing Spell Divinity option, necrotic smites and protection against magical compulsion.

Identity

The Oathbreaker is the Paladin after the oath. Breaking the oath does not take the power back, and the orders do not publish that fact. Another force holds the line where the oath used to, and the orders have no explanation for it. Some Oathbreakers fell on purpose and are worse for it. Others were released by a god that went silent, or kept a promise so exactly that it destroyed what it was meant to protect. The chapter-houses maintain that an Oathbreaker is a lost cause and keep records that suggest otherwise.

Features

• L3 Dread Command

  As a Spell Divinity option, you turn what is left of the oath outward. Each creature of your choice within 30 feet must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC or become Frightened for 1 minute, repeating the save at the end of each of its turns. Undead you choose instead obey your commands for that duration.

• L7 Aura of the Fallen

  You and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you add your Charisma modifier, minimum +1, to the first weapon damage roll each of you makes on your turn. The radius increases to 30 feet at 18th level.

• L11 Fallen Smite

  Your Divine Smite can deal necrotic damage instead of radiant, and when you reduce a creature to 0 hit points with it you regain hit points equal to your Charisma modifier.

• L15 Unbound

  You cannot be compelled by magic to keep a promise. You have advantage on saving throws against effects that would bind, charm or command you, and you always know when a creature is trying to hold you to an agreement.

• L18 Fallen Form Capstone

  Once per long rest, you gain the following benefits for 1 minute. You have resistance to all damage. Your critical hits occur on a roll of 19 or 20. Any creature that starts its turn within 30 feet of you and can see you must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw against your spell save DC or become Frightened until the end of its turn.
