How to Read a Creature
Every creature in this book is set the same way: its name, its picture where one was drawn, a few paragraphs on what it is and how it behaves, the places it is found, and then its stat panel. The description tells you how the creature acts and where it lives; the panel holds what you roll and check to run it in an encounter.
The panel's lines run in one order. Armor Class, hit points and speed come first because they are read every round. The six abilities follow as one row, each with its score and the modifier added to a roll. Then only the lines that apply: saving throws, skills, vulnerabilities, resistances, immunities, senses (ending with the passive Perception a Hide attempt has to beat), languages, and the Power Rating with the proficiency bonus it sets. Traits come next, then Actions, Bonus Actions, Reactions and Legendary Actions under their own headings.
To make an attack, roll a d20, add the listed bonus and compare the total with the target's Armor Class. On a hit, deal the average damage listed, or roll the dice in parentheses, then apply anything else the line says. A limit on how often something can be used sits in its name's parentheses. An attack bonus is the creature's proficiency bonus plus the attacking ability's modifier, and a save DC is 8 plus the proficiency bonus plus the modifier of the ability the entry names.
Use the Gamemaster's Manual to set an encounter budget from Power Ratings; the environments each habitat line names are described there too. Creatures fall into 13 types, and the lists at the back of this book group them by type and by Power Rating.
