Vodyanoy
Every working millpond on the old worlds has a vodyanoy, and the miller pays it a measure of grain at the first ice so that the pond takes no lives that season. If the miller breaks the arrangement, the wheel jams, the sluice fails and the next person to wade out to clear it does not come back up.
