Farmland

Land shaped for yield: field systems, orchards, paddy, pasture and the track network that serves them. It is the easiest ground on any world to cross, but every acre is worked by someone, so crossing unnoticed is hard. Forage here is a crop with an owner, and taking it is theft.

Roads and walls make movement easy, and workers see any party that crosses. Forage belongs to the owner of the field.

In play

  • Roads

Travel along a road doubles the day's distance and removes difficult terrain.

  • Owned

Foraging, camping or taking cover in a worked field is trespass under local jurisdiction.

  • Field boundaries

Walls, hedges and ditches divide the encounter into 100-foot squares, each giving half cover along its edge.

Variations

  • Cropland

Standing crop is lightly obscured from midsummer, and bare ground the rest of the year.

  • Rangeland

Grazed open country with fewer people, longer sightlines and herds that scatter when startled.

  • Frontier track

Survey camps and a road one rut wide. Whoever is armed holds jurisdiction.

Worlds it occurs on

  • City A planet whose surface is entirely built over, with no open ground and all air, water and food imported.
  • Terran (Verdant) A rocky world with liquid water, breathable air and a magnetic field to protect them, rare and the cause of most wars.
