Sin Eater

A sin-eater eats bread and ale passed across a body, and the dead go clean. The parish pays him sixpence and then will not sit with him, drink with him or bury him in the ground. He took on four decades of other people's worst hours and never set any of it down. When he was buried, he did not stay in the ground.

Traits

  • Sin Sense

The sin-eater knows the worst thing every creature within 30 feet has done and cannot stop knowing it.

  • Undying Office

When reduced to 0 hit points, the sin-eater drops to 1 instead unless the killing blow was struck by a creature that has confessed to it. This works once per day.

  • Shunned

The sin-eater cannot enter consecrated ground, and no settlement will shelter it.

Actions

  • Multiattack

The sin-eater makes two Cold Grasp attacks.

  • Cold Grasp

    +4 to hit · reach 5 ft.

    2d8 + 1 necrotic damage

  • Recite Secret

One creature within 30 feet makes a DC 15 Charisma save. On a failure it takes 5d8 psychic damage and is Frightened for 1 minute as the sin-eater recites a secret the creature has never told, in the creature's own voice.

  • Take the Burden

One willing creature within 5 feet ends all levels of the Wounded condition and every effect afflicting it. The sin-eater takes them all instead, and takes 4d10 necrotic damage.
