Aurelion Ascendancy
A post-biological empire whose aristocrats carry their minds from one body to the next.
The Aurelion Ascendancy is the central imperial power of the Prime Plane, governed by post-biological aristocrats called Ascendants. Its foundation is the memory mark, an encoded imprint of a mind that can be transferred into a new biological host or into a synthetic body. An Ascendant who dies wakes in the next body prepared for them, so the same individuals have held the same offices for millennia. The sigil is a phoenix, taken for continuity instead of rebirth.
The Aurelios developed memory marks on the planet Aurelion to keep archives intact and settle succession, and the class that formed around the technology came to treat mortality as an inefficiency. Expansion used the same covert method: marked agents were placed inside the governments of neighboring systems, and power changed hands before any fleet arrived. Authority runs from Ascendant Aurelion through the pureblood aristocracy and the Marked Councils, whose members rotate between bodies and posts so that none of them drift from imperial doctrine.
Three works anchor the territory. The Shield is a ring of mechanical fortress worlds crewed by Synth Aurelions whose marks are locked into machine bodies with no route back to flesh. The Sword is the belt of shipyard and weapons worlds to the northwest. The Eye is a natural quasar, its black hole threaded with a Mythar lattice, watched from an observation station on the eastern frontier where contact with Khaos ended the age of expansion and began the age of containment.
The Echelon Corporation supplies the empire under a standing trade alliance, and the Black Meridian Syndicate handles work that has to stay deniable. A fragile peace holds with the Halcyion Federation after generations of war over the Axis Hyper-Lane, maintained by mutual exhaustion and by the pressure of Khaos on both their borders.
