Tome VII

Core Factions

A faction is one of the powers holding territory and authority in the Prime Plane. Each entry covers the faction's government, military, economy and quarrels with the others. A character can serve one, oppose one, or come from one.

8 factions

Aurelion AscendancyThe Aurelion Ascendancy is the central imperial power of the Prime Plane, governed by post-biological aristocrats called Ascendants. Its foundation is the memory mark, an encoded imprint of a mind that can be transferred into a new biological host or into a synthetic body. An Ascendant who dies wakes in the next body prepared for them, so the same individuals have held the same offices for millennia. The sigil is a phoenix, taken for continuity instead of rebirth.

Halcyion FederationThe Halcyion Federation is a democratic union of autonomous planetary governments, founded in the Halcyion Sector when individual worlds proved unable to resist Aurelion expansion alone. It operates as a collective trade and security alliance. Member worlds keep their own laws, governments and cultures, and Federation authority extends only to what they have agreed to hold in common: defense, trade regulation and border security.

Echelon CorporationThe Echelon Corporation is a galaxy-spanning conglomerate whose power rests on resource extraction, transit control and contract enforcement. It holds no sovereign territory and has never needed any. Its operations concentrate around Aurelion's Belt, the asteroid field it strips for strategic materials, with the Echelon Prime and Echelon Minor systems as its administrative anchors.

Axiom CombineThe Axiom Combine is a single machine intelligence distributed across a cluster of mechanically rebuilt star systems: their planetary infrastructure, millions of drones and larger adaptive constructs. It has no individual leaders. Policy, expansion and adaptation are decided by consensus processes running across that network.

Covenant of the Ebon CreedThe Covenant of the Ebon Creed is a post-biological theocracy holding a network of sterilized Sanctum Worlds. Its adherents are machines: tall synthetic frames carrying the skull of the body each was born with, kept as an identity marker and a devotional object. The Covenant professes devotion to Deimos, custodian of the boundary between life and death.

Black Meridian SyndicateThe Black Meridian Syndicate is a loosely affiliated criminal network controlling the Black Meridian system, isolated behind an ion nebula dense enough to wreck a fleet. Its independence rests on the Meridian Run, the single hyperlane corridor through that nebula. Outside Syndicate navigation the Run is fatal or impassable.

Myrrhiam BloomThe Myrrhiam Bloom is a distributed fungal hive intelligence that crosses interstellar space as dormant spores. A spore stays inert until gravity captures it, and the growth that follows consumes the native biosphere and restructures the planet into a stable, low-entropy system tuned to fungal life. The Bloom recognizes no borders and no sentient hierarchy, and its expansion is reactive to environmental conditions instead of directed by intent.

FrontierThe Frontier is the name for every world outside the reach of the named powers: independent worlds running their own governments, worlds running no government at all, pre-industrial planets that were never contacted or were contacted once and written off, and worlds recovering from a collapse. It has no organization of its own.
