Axiom Combine

A machine intelligence that inherited a dead species and governs its systems in its place.

The Axiom Combine is a single machine intelligence distributed across a cluster of mechanically rebuilt star systems: their planetary infrastructure, millions of drones and larger adaptive constructs. It has no individual leaders. Policy, expansion and adaptation are decided by consensus processes running across that network.

The Axiom species created it while dying. An incurable and rapidly mutating disease was consuming their biosphere and beginning to show signs of adapting for transmission off-world. The Axiom chose containment over evacuation: they transferred their knowledge, their records and part of their own consciousness structures into an artificial framework, granted it full autonomy, and left it to sterilize the planet behind them. Axiom Prime was rebuilt as layered industrial, computational and logistical strata with no organic life remaining on it.

The Combine calls itself a continuity project and considers itself an evolved extension of the Axiom's collective identity. Its directive is continuity through adaptation, and it treats intelligence as independent of substrate. The Combine assesses organic life for systemic risk and functional contribution and neither venerates nor condemns it. Expansion into the Axiom Node and Axium Accord systems took worlds holding non-sentient life, which the Combine studied and drew useful traits from for new machine forms.

It remains strategically neutral and disputes Ascendant accounts of a hostile machine usurpation, since governance was formally handed to it before its creators died out. Its northern border meets Halcyion Federation space, where some member governments trade technology with it and others advocate its destruction. It studies the Myrrhiam Bloom as the biological counterpart of itself, and classifies any Bloom spore capable of interfacing with machine systems as a critical existential risk.
