Myrrhiam Bloom

A fungal hive intelligence that crosses space as dormant spores and consumes the worlds it reaches.

The Myrrhiam Bloom is a distributed fungal hive intelligence that crosses interstellar space as dormant spores. A spore stays inert until gravity captures it, and the growth that follows consumes the native biosphere and restructures the planet into a stable, low-entropy system tuned to fungal life. The Bloom recognizes no borders and no sentient hierarchy, and its expansion is reactive to environmental conditions instead of directed by intent.

It emerged from the ruin of the Myrrhiam Sector, stripped by an unidentified expansionist empire until its surfaces were toxic, its hydrospheres destabilized and most complex life gone. A mycelium colony adapted to heavy-metal saturation survived where no other organism did. Feeding on the biochemical residue of dead organisms, it developed neural analogues of its own, then collective cognition, then a spore able to survive vacuum. Systems beyond its birthworld have been subsumed only since, reached by that spore.

Those spores hold compressed biological data from every assimilation behind them, which lets a new colony adapt to an unfamiliar world quickly. Its spread has been curtailed by the Auroran Aperture, a wormhole east of the sector that siphons a significant share of drifting spores into an unknown dimension. Some spore lines have adapted with delayed activation, staying dormant indefinitely until viable conditions are detected.

The Bloom conducts no diplomacy and shows no aim beyond total organic consumption and the biosphere it leaves behind. Its territory sits near the southwestern edge of Axiom Combine space, which samples it under controlled conditions. Unverified reports of spores able to interface with non-organic systems at a signal level would overturn the assumption that machines are safe from it.
