Channel of Ether-Rifting
Boosts Arcana checks and Counter spells, severs a spell as it is cast, senses spellwork, ends a spell effect outright and redirects spells at 18th level.
Identity
The Channel of Ether-Rifting is the Riftcraft Tradition that unmakes. The Ether is the seam between Channels, the thread on which other Rifters' formulas hang, and an Ether-Rifter learns first to cut that thread. Court-wizards employ them as anti-channeler specialists, the Covenant of the Ebon Creed reveres them as theologians of negation, and fleet auditors enlist them to strip rogue spells off a field. Most of an Ether-Rifter's list only does anything when another channeler is present.
Features
- L3 Ether Training
You gain proficiency in the Arcana skill if you do not already have it. When you copy an Ether-Rifting spell into your Spellbook, the cost is halved. You have advantage on Arcana checks made to identify a spell being cast, recognize a Rift-derived effect, or determine the source of a magical or channeled phenomenon. When you cast the Counter spell or any spell with the dispel or counterspell tag, you treat your effective casting level as one level higher than the slot expended. The Attune, Discern, Veil, and Counter spells are always prepared for you and do not count against your prepared spell limit.
- L7 Sever Casting
When a creature within 60 feet of you casts a spell that you can perceive, you can use your reaction to try to sever the casting before it completes. Make an Intelligence check contested by the caster's spellcasting ability check. On a success, the spell fizzles and its slot is expended without effect. On a failure, the spell resolves normally. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus per long rest, and it does not use a spell slot.
- L11 Spell Sight
You can use an action to attune your senses to the Ether for 10 minutes. While attuned, you can see Rift-bound effects, channeled creatures, Invisible creatures sustained by spells, and the trailing residue of recent castings (within the last hour) as faintly luminous threads. You have advantage on saving throws against spells and Rift-derived effects, and you know the spell and level of any spell cast within 30 feet of you without needing an Arcana check. You can use this feature a number of times per long rest equal to your Intelligence modifier (minimum 1).
- L15 End Effect
Once per short rest, you can use an action to target a single ongoing spell effect, conjured entity, or Rift-bound magical phenomenon within 60 feet. The target must succeed on a saving throw using its caster's spellcasting ability against your spell save DC, or it ends outright, including effects normally immune to dispelling. This only works if its original casting level does not exceed half your Wizard level (rounded up). Permanent magic items, divine intervention effects, and Tier V phenomena are not affected.
- L18 Redirect Spell Capstone
You gain resistance to force, psychic, and rift damage. Once per long rest, when a creature within 60 feet of you casts a spell of 5th level or lower, you can use your reaction, without expending a spell slot, to try to redirect the spell's target. The caster must succeed on a Charisma saving throw against your spell save DC. On a failure, you choose a new target for the spell, which must be a legal target and within the spell's range from the original caster. On a success, the spell proceeds normally.
