Adze

On jungle and frontier worlds an adze passes for one more light in the canopy. It slips into huts and prefab habs at night to drink from sleepers, and favors children. Caught in a jar or a net, it becomes a thin human figure, and it can enter a person's body and control it. Settlements that know the signs burn a light at every door and count the fireflies.

Traits

  • Firefly Form

The adze spends most of its time as a Tiny glowing insect with a fly speed of 40 feet. In this form it cannot attack and its only action is Possess. When it is Grappled, Restrained or trapped in a container, it takes human form in the nearest open space and cannot return to firefly form until the start of its next turn.

  • Blood Thirst

The adze has advantage on attack rolls against a creature that is asleep, Unconscious or below half its hit points.

Actions

  • Claws

    +7 to hit · reach 5 ft.

    2d6 + 4 slashing damage

In human form only, the adze makes two attacks with this action.

  • Drink Bonus action

    +7 to hit · reach 5 ft.

    2d6 + 4 necrotic damage

The adze can use this attack only against a sleeping, Grappled or Unconscious creature. The target's hit point maximum drops by the damage dealt, and the adze regains that many hit points.

  • Possess

    DC 14 Charisma save

One humanoid the adze can touch makes a Charisma saving throw. On a failure the adze vanishes into its body and controls it. The adze keeps its Intelligence, Wisdom and Charisma and uses the host's statistics otherwise. It leaves when the host drops to 0 hit points, is targeted by protection from evil and good, or succeeds on the save at the end of a long rest, reappearing as a firefly within 5 feet. A creature that succeeds is immune to this adze's Possess for 24 hours.

  • Scatter Reaction

When the adze takes damage in human form and is not Grappled, it becomes a firefly and flies up to half its fly speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
