Accursed Khaos Crawler

An accursed Khaos crawler is a construct with eight legs and a manuscript fused into its housing. It reads from the pages continuously, and whatever is written takes effect in the room around it. The text changes: recovered fragments read differently each time they are opened.

Traits

  • Shifting Text

At the start of each of its turns, roll a d4. On a 1 its attacks deal an extra 3d6 rift damage; on a 2 it has resistance to all damage; on a 3 its reach doubles; on a 4 it can act again at the end of the round.

  • Bound to the Manuscript

Destroying the manuscript destroys it. The manuscript has Armor Class 19 and 50 hit points and can be targeted only by a creature that has Grappled the crawler.

  • Web Walker

The crawler ignores movement restrictions caused by webbing, and can climb any surface including a ceiling.

Actions

  • Multiattack

The crawler makes three leg attacks, or uses Read Aloud and makes two leg attacks.

  • Bladed Leg

    +7 to hit · reach 10 ft.

    2d10 + 3 slashing damage

  • Read Aloud

Each creature within 30 feet makes a DC 16 Wisdom save, taking 8d8 psychic damage on a failure or half as much on a success. A creature that fails by 5 or more is Stunned until the end of its next turn.

  • Rewrite the Floor

A 20-foot square within 60 feet stops obeying its previous arrangement for 1 minute. It is difficult terrain, and a creature that ends its turn in it makes a DC 16 Dexterity save or takes 4d10 rift damage.
