An armor piece changes no Armor Class on its own; the body armor is what sets it. Wearing the ESC Combat Vest together with its head, hands, legs and feet pieces grants a +1 bonus to Armor Class.
Grades
The same object, worked to a better standard. The grade is the rung; the bonus is what the rung is worth at the table.
Equipment Line
The same kit across the tiers. Later rungs replace earlier ones.
