You put a question to the field and take what comes back. Ask one question about a specific course of action you intend to take within the next hour. The GM replies with one of: favorable, unfavorable, both, or nothing. A result of nothing means the Ether gave no answer and tells you nothing about whether the action is safe. If you cast this spell again before you finish a long rest, there is a cumulative 25 percent chance for each additional casting that the answer is random, and you are not told when it is.
