Lower Atmosphere

The air from the ground up to the tropopause, where the temperature stops falling and the weather stops. It holds most of the atmosphere's mass, all of its water and every flying thing that is not a spacecraft. The bottom mile is turbulent because of the terrain beneath it, and above that the air is smoother, thinner and colder with every thousand feet.

Breathable throughout, turbulent at the bottom, cold at the top.

In play

  • Turbulence

In the lowest mile, a flying creature or vessel makes a DC 10 Dexterity save on any round it changes altitude sharply, or is moved 1d4 x 10 feet in a random direction.

  • Falling

A creature that loses flight here falls for 1d6 rounds before it lands.

  • Thinning

Above 15,000 feet a creature without oxygen has disadvantage on Constitution saves. Above 25,000 it gains a level of exhaustion each hour.

  • Aeroplankton

Spores, seeds and small drifting life ride the layer in visible density and form the food chain that supports floating settlements.

Variations

  • Boundary layer

The lowest mile. Rough, dirty, and shaped by whatever terrain is underneath.

  • Free troposphere

Above the drag. Smooth, thin and cold, and where a floating citadel sits.

Worlds it occurs on

  • City A planet whose surface is entirely built over, with no open ground and all air, water and food imported.
  • Foundry World A world converted end to end into industrial plant, with an exhaust atmosphere and a day set by shifts.
  • Terran (Arctic) A rocky world covered in ice for most of the year but habitable, with open water at the margin in summer.
  • Terran (Arid) A hot, dry rocky world habitable at its edges, with dune seas across the interior.
  • Terran (Barren) Rock and wasteland with a thin atmosphere or none, habitable but sparsely settled.
  • Terran (Oceanic) A world of ocean from pole to pole, with land only where a volcano has kept up.
  • Terran (Verdant) A rocky world with liquid water, breathable air and a magnetic field to protect them, rare and the cause of most wars.
  • Zephyr A gas world with no surface, crossed by fast bands of wind that run at different speeds.
